If you’re looking to get a close-up glimpse of tomorrow’s local leaders, stop by the Woodbridge Community Center this Saturday as Mayor Frank G. Pelzman bestows the Mayor’s Youth Volunteer Award to 19 young Woodbridge Township residents nominated for distinguished community service.
These aren’t the spoiled, destructive youth who make the majority of news headlines. These are the dedicated teens and tweens who make a significant impact as church volunteers, peer tutors, athletic coaches, hospital aides, clothing and food drive coordinators, first aid and fire squad members. The youngsters who spend their free time serving the homeless, the elderly, the sick. . . helping out in animal shelters, daycare centers, community gardens.
The good kids are all around us, says Mayor Pelzman, and he believes Youth Volunteer Recognition Day will help bring them the attention they and their causes merit.
“These young people are already leaders who contribute to our community,” says Mayor Pelzman. “Our intent with the awards is to recognize their ongoing impact on the Township’s quality of life.”
Youth Volunteer Recognition Day is part of a Township-wide program celebrating April as Young People’s Month.
“Young People’s Month is our way of drawing attention to the incredible diversity of activities the Township offers for young people and their families,” says Councilwoman Caroline Ehrlich, who chaired the committee organizing the month’s events. “We have had the YMCA, Community Center, Barron Arts Center, health department, parks and recreation department and our libraries pitch in to give a sample of the activities they offer young people throughout the year.”
The recipients of the 2006 Mayor’s Youth Volunteer Award are: Alexis Almeida, Amanda Bacha, Natalie Bujalksi, Elizabeth Campbell, David Caravassi, Daniel Dix, Randy Eckensberger, Robert Gill, Kelly Gillespie, Stephen Herczeg, Elijah James, Claire Kelly, Anthony McWatters, Joshua Nocks, Meghan Plucinski, Ryan Richstein, Edward Strauss, Megan Szostak, Amanda Weindel.
“These individuals are a great source of pride for us all,” says Mayor Pelzman. “They are an inspiration to us all and give us genuine hope for the future.”
