Woodbridge Kicks Off “Young People’s Month” Mar. 31

Mar. 23, 2006

Township takes active role in promoting programs for growing under-18 population

April is national Month of the Young Child , and Woodbridge Township will offer close to two dozen special events incorporating this year’s theme of “Building Better Futures for All Children” .

The Township celebration begins Mar. 31 at 10 a.m. with a ceremony at the YMCA-Community Center, 600 Main Street. Mayor Frank G. Pelzman will present a proclamation declaring April as Month of the Young Child and honoring all those involved in the work of educating young children.

Magician Ed O’Neill will entertain, and the event is free and open to the public.

“Nearly a quarter of our Township population is under age of 18,” says Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. “As that population grows, we are devoting an increasing number of programs and resources to young people’s physical, intellectual and social development.”

Throughout the year hundreds of classes and programs for youth are offered by the Barron Arts Center, Woodbridge Township Youth Recreation Council, Department of Parks and Recreation, Township Libraries and YMCA at the Woodbridge Community Center.

The Township Health and Human Services Department has also deployed additional clinics and services for young people and families, including the year-long lead screening program for children ages 1-5 sponsored in part by funding from Alcoa Foundation.

“Young People’s Month in Woodbridge is our way of drawing attention to the incredible diversity of activities the Township offers for young people and their families,” says Councilwoman Caroline Ehrlich, who chaired the committee organizing the events.

Notable events during the month include the annual Township Easter Egg Hunt (Apr. 8), Easter Parade (Apr. 16), Woodbridge Township Spring Festival sponsored by Centenary College (Apr. 17) and Youth Volunteer Recognition Day (Apr. 22) honoring the Township’s youth involved in community service.

“Young people are our best resource for the future,” says Mayor Pelzman. “These programs are an example of our commitment to furthering their development.”
