Christmas Friendship Dinner in Woodbridge Set for Dec. 25 |
December 7, 2005
There is absolutely no reason to spend Christmas alone in Woodbridge, says Bob Sobieski. He should know, because for the last 14 years he and his wife, Michelle, have organized the annual Christmas Friendship Dinner that lays a welcome table setting for any and all who walk through the door.
The free dinner takes place Dec. 25 from 1-3 p.m. at Milos Parish Hall of St. Anthony of Padua Church, 436 Port Reading Avenue, Port Reading. Attendees should call (732) 636-1124 to let the organizers know how many meals to prepare. Transportation is available, and meals are also delivered to the home-bound.
The fare is hearty and plentiful: turkey and stuffing, candied sweet potatoes, chicken paella, potato soup, fruit cocktail and a variety of delicious cakes baked by St. Anthony parishioners. And the diners are as mixed as the menu: families, couples and singles of all ages drop in, quickly transforming a church hall into a convivial celebration of hearth and home.
Mayor Frank G. Pelzman is among the volunteer serving staff. “Anyone who enters as a stranger will certainly find new friends by the end of the afternoon,” he says. “This is an event that truly captures the heart and soul of Christmas.”
Bob Sobieski is a former Woodbridge Township Councilman and recipient of the 2004 Jack Fay Civic Award for community service. The dinner is funded by local business donations.
