Woodbridge Township will begin construction on a $1.9 million upgrade to the athletic fields behind Woodbridge High School, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.
The groundbreaking for the construction takes place Mar. 20 at 3 p.m.
The funds come from the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders’Open Space, Recreation and Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund.
The upgrade includes four fields for baseball, soccer and softball; new walkways and restrooms; improvements to bleachers, field equipment and field surfaces.
“We have an expanding population in Woodbridge and the surrounding area, especially in the under-18 segment,” says Mayor Pelzman. “ Woodbridge Township has a large and thriving youth sports program that will benefit from this investment in improved facilities.”
Woodbridge Township School DistrictSuperintendent Vincent Smith says the grant is an excellent example of shared services among the school district, township and county. “This money will help us keep up with the recreational needs of our students for several years to come.”
Money from the Open Space, Recreation and Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund has been used to support a wide range of projects, ranging from restoration of the State Theatre in New Brunswick to acquiring farmland for open space preservation.
“The Open Space fund gives us the flexibility to put county tax dollars directly back into the community,” says Middlesex County Freeholder Director David B. Crabiel.
Middlesex County Freeholder Deputy Director Stephen “Pete” Dalina adds that the county is pleased to provide funding for a project like the Woodbridge athletic fields upgrade. “The Open Space fund was designed to bring about exactly this sort of innovative win-win situation for localities.”
