WOODBRIDGE – When the 91 members of Charlie Company 2-113 leave this Friday for active duty at Guantanamo, Cuba, they will take along a vivid reminder of home.
The New Jersey National Guard unit, which numbers approximately two dozen Woodbridge residents in its ranks, asked Mayor Frank G. Pelzman if he would present them with a Woodbridge Township flag to take to Cuba. The Mayor agreed immediately.
“This is a small but sincere gesture of the good wishes and heartfelt support the Township feels for our men and women in the Armed Forces,” said Mayor Pelzman. “We hope this symbol of their hometown provides inspiration and comfort during their time of service overseas.”
The 2nd Battalion, 113th Infantry of the U.S. Army 42nd Infantry Division, makes its headquarters in Riverdale, Morris County, New Jersey, and draws personnel from across northern New Jersey. Units are located in Newark, Jersey City and Woodbridge, as well as Riverdale.
The battalion’s roots go back to 1664, the same year as the founding of Woodbridge, when it formed as a militia to defend the colony of East Jersey. The outfit has served in declared conflicts (King George's War, Seven Years War, American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II) and during civil emergencies (Civil Disorders of 1967, blizzards of 1977-1978, Passaic River floods of 1984, Hurricane Floyd in 1999).
Since September 11, 2001, the unit has been deployed domestically for various
homeland defense duties.
