MAYOR McCORMAC & SUPERINTENDENT SMITH ANNOUNCE START OF CONSTRUCTION OF NEW SYNTHETIC TURF ATHLETIC FIELD AT WOODBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL

July 11, 2007

State-of-the Art Playing Surface Will Field Football, Soccer, Field Hockey and Other Sports…

Woodbridge Mayor John E. McCormac today announced that construction of a new, state-of-the-art, multi-purpose synthetic turf playing field has broken ground at Woodbridge High School. The installation of the $880,000 synthetic turf field is the first modern field to be constructed in Woodbridge Township. When completed in September, the multi-purpose field will provide a state-of-the–art playing surface for Township athletes participating in football, soccer, field hockey, and other field sports.

“This new synthetic turf field represents a giant step forward for Woodbridge Township, the Board of Education, and for our youth sports programs and athletes,” said Mayor McCormac. “Athletes from throughout Woodbridge Township, our three high schools and middle schools will benefit from this investment in their sporting future. And, Woodbridge sport programs and athletes will now be competitive with neighboring high school sport programs and will be able to engage the competition on a level playing field.”

Joining Mayor McCormac for the groundbreaking ceremony were Vincent Smith, Superintendent, Woodbridge Township School District, Thomas “Skip” Garley, President, Board of Education, Brian Molnar, Board of Education, Lee Warren, Principal, Woodbridge High School, Joseph Ward, Athletic Director, Brian Russo, Head Coach, WHS Football, John Eberhardt, Director, Woodbridge Township Department of Recreation, and representatives of the Woodbridge Township Youth Recreation Council and Township youth organizations and sport programs. Also attending the groundbreaking were Mike McClelland, CME Associates (project designer) and Gabe Fossett, Land Tek Construction ( project supervisor), and Jeff Long, Land Tek Construction (project manager).

“On behalf of the school district and the athletic sports programs at all of our schools, I am pleased to participate in the ground breaking of what is the newest and most modern athletic playing field in the region,” said Superintendent Smith.

“The partnership between the Township Administration and the School District has resulted in the revitalization of school athletic facilities, including the new synthetic playing field at Woodbridge High School, a new multi-purpose track at Colonia High School, and new tennis courts at JFK High School – projects achieved by maximizing resources.”

Mayor McCormac said that the Woodbridge High School synthetic turf field construction project went to public bid on May 25. The construction contract was awarded on June 13 to Land Tek Construction Company and construction on the field got underway in July . The new playing field is expected to be completed by September 1 – in time for the upcoming football season for Township Varsity and Junior Varsity teams and recreation leagues. The multi-purpose synthetic turf sport field at Woodbridge High School, along with upgraded security systems and infrastructure improvements at other Township school facilities, benefit the Board of Education, Township taxpayers and athletes by utilizing revenue generated from the PROLOGIS warehouse construction project.

“On behalf of the entire Municipal Council, I am extremely pleased that we have been able to put together a facility that is cost effective, considers the needs of all Township taxpayers and financial priorities, while at the same time allows us to achieve the goal that we all share – a safe, modern and competitive playing field for Township athletes,” said Councilman Gregg Ficarra.
