The 1100+ names inscribed upon the Woodbridge Honor Roll Veterans Memorial commemorate the Woodbridge residents who served in the Armed Forces during World War II.
The memorial is maintained by American Legion Post 87 and has been a source of local pride since its initial dedication May 14, 1944. Thanks to a community-wide fundraising effort, the restoration of the storm-damaged site and the plaque bearing the honor roll names has been accomplished. The re-dedication will occur May 15, 2004 at 10 a.m..
"It is so important, particularly at this time in our history, to pay tribute to those brave souls who fought for our freedom during World War II," says Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. "The restoration of their memorial is a way for us to say thank you and to inspire current and future generations as they serve our country."
Councilman Charles Kenny says that anyone whose name is on the memorial, or who is the relative of someone whose name is on the memorial, is invited to attend as a special guest of honor. "We want you to attend the re-dedication ceremony and receive due honors for the contribution to American freedom made by yourself or your family," he says.
