Blooms as "Tree City"

May 6, 2004
For the 11th straight year, Woodbridge Township has been named "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.
"Once again Woodbridge Township is recognized for placing a great emphasis on protecting the environment and preserving our natural resources," said Mayor Pelzman.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. As result of the Tree City designation, the New Jersey Forestry Service's Community Forestry Program will offer the Township free seedlings.
"The trees we plant will raise property values, beautify our neighborhoods and provide a haven for wildlife," the Mayor said.
According to the National Arbor Day Foundation, Woodbridge has attained the four standards to earn the Tree City USA: a tree board or department, a comprehensive community forestry program, a tree care ordinance and an Arbor Day observance.
In addition, the township began last month taking maturing trees from its tree farm on the Motiva Enterprises property in Sewaren and re-planting them throughout Woodbridge at schools and public sites as part of the township's ongoing beautification program.
"We are especially proud that this is our 11th year as Tree City, because it proves that Woodbridge Township is committed to keeping our community green," said Councilwoman Pat Osborne.
The Mayor applauded the Woodbridge Environmental Commission, whose efforts helped secure the township's Tree City USA designation. Chantal Greffer, Commission Chairperson, says the replanting of trees has been the Commission's priority for the past several years. "With the seedlings the township has received, we are educating our children in the importance of trees for their beauty and function," said Ms. Greffer.
