Woodbridge Offers Tax Preparation Aid for Seniors & Disabled

Jan. 6, 2006

Division on Aging Sponsors IRS-Trained Volunteers through April 11

The Woodbridge Township Division on Aging is offering free tax preparation assistance to eligible senior citizens and disabled Township residents, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.

Volunteers trained by the IRS and the New Jersey Department of Taxation are on hand to assist Woodbridge Township residents 65 and over, or those under 65 receiving Social Security disability benefits. Residents must meet income guidelines to be eligible.

“This is a valuable service to our seniors and disabled residents,” says Mayor Pelzman. “The tax preparation volunteers at the Division on Aging do an outstanding job, and I encourage eligible residents to take advantage of it.”

On Jan. 9 the Division on Aging will begin taking calls to set appointments for tax preparation sessions. The sessions start Feb. 14 and are held at Woodbridge Health Center, 2 George Frederick Plaza, from 9 a.m. to noon every Tuesday until April 11, 2006.

Those interested should call the Division on Aging at 732-855-0600 ext. 5023 to check their eligibility and make an appointment. ”When a resident calls for an appointment, we will go through the criteria and establish eligibility at that time,” says Irene Allan, Division on Aging Director.

Tax assistance is available for standard tax forms only. Single resident annual gross income cannot exceed $30,000.00. Married couple combined income cannot exceed $36,000.00. Persons over these income limits who have their 2005 income tax forms already completed may get assistance with the NJ-PTR 1 or NJ-PTR 2 forms only.

Those Woodbridge residents who do not meet income requirements for the Division on Aging tax assistance can call the Division office for other options. Free tax assistance sessions are provided by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) at Woodbridge Main Library, Inman Branch Library, Iselin Branch Library and Evergreen Senior Center.
