Woodbridge to Honor Families of Troops Serving Overseas

May 16, 2006

May 25 “Support Our Troops Rally” raises home front funds, spirits

On May 25, the Township will sponsor a Support Our Troops Rally at 6:30 p.m. at George Frederick Plaza between Woodbridge Main Library and Woodbridge High School, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.

“Serving overseas is a tremendous emotional burden on our soldiers and their families,” says Mayor Pelzman. “And it is their families who deserve additional recognition for their steadfast support through a very trying time.”

Organizers hope to locate Township residents with family military members serving in “hot” zones overseas – Afghanistan, Iraq, Guantanamo – and pay tribute to the soldiers’ efforts during a special ceremony.

Any Woodbridge Township resident who has a family member serving in the overseas military should call Councilman Charles Kenny at (732) 636-9677 or email him at < kenc83@aol.com >.

The rally grows out of a 2004 Township Council resolution stating that the Council “wholeheartedly supports our troops both abroad and at home and wish to extend our appreciation and thankfulness for their courage and bravery and also acknowledge the sacrifices they are making on our behalf.” The resolution passed unanimously.

The rally also collects monetary donations to help families defer the cost of shipping supplies to their military members overseas. For information call (732) 636-9677.

“Our troops are still facing severe combat conditions,” says Councilman Kenny. “This rally will help them realize they have not been abandoned on the home front and are still in our minds and prayers.”
