Mayor Lauds Community Generosity, Cites Need for Continued Support
The 2005 Mayor’s Summer Concert Series brought in 35,400 pounds of much-needed food for the Township’s eight food banks, announced Mayor Frank G. Pelzman.
Patrons who attended the concerts were encouraged to donate canned goods and non-perishable food items as part of a special program supported by ShopRite and Woodbridge Center, the series’ prime sponsors.
The amount collected over the course of eight concerts exceeded last year’s total of $34,800, despite two concerts where rainy weather yielded sparse attendance.
“Our audiences are incredibly generous,” says Mayor Pelzman. “In the midst of having a good time, Woodbridge Township residents do not forget their neighbors.”
Many food banks close in summer because of a drastic seasonal drop-off in donations, notes Mayor Pelzman, even though demand for assistance increases. “We are fortunate that our local food banks can remain open because of the community’s vigilance and concern.”
The ongoing need for donations continues, however, and Mayor Pelzman urges people to drop off canned goods or other non-perishables at the Woodbridge Township Health Center on George Frederick Plaza between Woodbridge High School and the Main Library. Donations will be accepted Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A collection barrel has been set up in the Health Center lobby.
Donations may also be brought to the following food pantries: St. James Church, Grove Avenue, Woodbridge; Trinity Episcopal Church, Trinity Lane, Woodbridge; Congregation Adath Israel, Amboy Avenue, Woodbridge; First Congregational Church, Barron Avenue, Woodbridge; First Presbyterian Church, Rahway Avenue, Woodbridge; First Presbyterian Church, Middlesex Avenue, Iselin; First Presbyterian Church, E. Woodbridge Avenue, Avenel; St. Cecelia Church, Wilus Way, Iselin.
