Mayor John E. McCormac to Lead Town Hall Ceremonies & Flag Raising
Public ceremonies for the 34 th Annual Woodbridge St. Patrick’s Day celebration and parade will get underway on Sun., March 11 at 9:00 a.m. with the ceremonial reading and presentation of Proclamations to the St. Patrick’s Day honorees and the raising of the Irish Flag at Woodbridge Town Hall ( 1 Main Street), Mayor John E. McCormac today announced.
“The annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration allows us the opportunity to come together as a community to honor and recognize the heritage, culture, and contributions of our Irish forefathers who participated in the early settlement and later development of Woodbridge Township,” said Mayor McCormac. “As Mayor, I am honored to represent the Township of Woodbridge and the American Irish Association as we salute our Irish-American community with the pomp and circumstance of the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.”
Mayor McCormac noted that the festivities get underway at 9:00 a.m. in Woodbridge Town Hall as the Administration and Municipal Council recognize the Irish American community of Woodbridge with the reading of Proclamations and the symbolic raising of the national flag of Ireland. At 1:30 p.m., the annual parade steps-off from Woodbridge High School, moves to Freeman Street, onto Linden Avenue, to Route 35 and continues down Main Street concluding at the reviewing stand in front of Town Hall.
Enjoy more than 80 marching units, including traditional Irish bagpipers, marching bands representing Woodbridge Township High Schools, special floats and displays, and representatives from various Scouting organizations, fire departments, first aid squads, and community religious, civic, sports, and neighborhood groups as they are led by parade Grand Marshall James Patrick Durek of Colonia. The 2007 American Irish honorees include John “Sean” Keaveney of Woodbridge and Joan Theresa Dias of Iselin as the Woodbridge Township Irish Persons of the Year. This year’s Miss American Irish is Maggie Warn and her Lady-in-Waiting is Allyson Shea Frick.
“On St. Patrick’s Day, everyone is ‘Irish-for-the-Day’,” said Mayor McCormac. “Join neighbors, friends, and family as we honor and remember the contributions of our Irish ancestors and residents. Enjoy the parade and enjoy the day of celebration.”
