Free and Challenging Health, Education & Fitness Events & Activities for Senior Residents Scheduled Throughout May
Woodbridge – Mayor John E. McCormac and embers of the Municipal Council today announced May as “Senior Month” throughout Woodbridge Township during a special volunteer appreciation ceremony at the Evergreen Senior Center in Colonia.
Mayor McCormac said that “Senior Month” offers
educational, recreational, and entertainment activities
designed for senior and adult members of the
community and encourages senior residents to engage in
activities and events such as health and fitness programs
and competition, mind-stimulating activities such as
jeopardy, sudoko, art and music classes, health programs
and medical screenings, and senior receptions and
community engagements.
“Senior residents throughout the community are encouraged to take advantage of the many activities underway at the Community Center at the YMCA and the Evergreen Senior Center, as well as events sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Township Recreation Department,” Mayor McCormac said. “Senior Month allows us the opportunity to recognize and challenge senior residents and to provide services and activities that stimulate, educate and encourage an active and challenging lifestyle.”
Throughout “Senior Month,” the Community Center, YMCA, Evergreen Center, and the Township Health and Recreation Departments are sponsoring many free programs, events, and educational and informational sessions and opportunities, including:

Mayor McCormac noted that as part of “Senior Month” the staff at the Evergreen Center honored 25 senior volunteers for their service to the Center and to the hundreds of members and visitors that take advantage of the Center’s activities and programs. The Mayor also noted that more than 110 senior residents attended the Elder Law Conference at Evergreen to learn about the many legal-related issues facing senior residents such as wills, trusts, estates, medical decisions and consumer-related issues. “I want to commend our volunteers, staff and program participants for their dedicated service year after year. Without them, Evergreen would not be the challenging and exciting center that is has become,” Mayor McCormac said.
Mayor McCormac also announced that Woodbridge Township will host the New Jersey Senior Olympics on Sept. 7, 8, and 9. The 2007 New Jersey Senior Olympics features more than 15 sporting events geared to Senior competition – amateur athletes age 50 and up. Woodbridge is able to offer Senior athletes a true, world-class competition venue that includes the Woodbridge Community Center & YMCA, The Club at Woodbridge and municipal recreation fields and sporting facilities, including a full-size gymnasium, Olympic-size swimming pool, roller skating rink, NHL-size ice skating and hockey rink, a wellness center, walking track, meeting rooms, and recreational and lounge areas.
