New Snow Emergency Routes, Snow Removal Guidelines in Effect

In preparation for the winter weather that is bound to hit New Jersey sooner or later, Woodbridge Mayor Frank G. Pelzman is reminding residents to comply with Township ordinances designed to maintain unobstructed sidewalks and roadways.

“Clearing private sidewalks of snow and ice is essential not just for persons engaged in business but for folks going about their daily activities in their neighborhood,” says Mayor Pelzman. “This is a critical public safety law that helps everybody.”

The Township ordinance states that property owners should create a clear pedestrian walkway by removing all snow and ice from sidewalk areas bordering their property. If ice is frozen too solid to be cleared, it should be covered with sand, sawdust, rock salt or some other melting or traction-giving agent.

Improved traffic safety is the goal of an ordinance approved last spring by the Township Council designating close to 100 roadways in Woodbridge Township as snow emergency routes.

“Increasing the streets that receive curb-to-curb plowing will ensure that emergency vehicles and residents have better mobility during a snow storm and its aftermath,” said Mayor Pelzman. “It is vital that fire trucks, ambulances, police cars and school buses be able to move safely and swiftly anywhere in the Township when it snows.”

Township residents can tune in to municipal cable channel WTT-35 to see what streets are on the emergency route list.

“We may not be able to control the weather,” says Mayor Pelzman, “but we can prepare efficient strategies to cope with it.”
