Mayor Frank G. Pelzman will seek assistance at the state level to expedite the process that regulates municipal officials’ authority to notify residents about convicted sex offenders living in the community.
Full details will be disclosed during a press conference set for July 25 at noon in Council Chambers at Woodbridge Town Hall. Mayor Pelzman will speak, accompanied by Senator Joseph Vitale (D-Middlesex).
On July 19, Woodbridge Township Police arrested two registered sex offenders living in the Hirams Community mobile-home park in Avenel. The arrests came after parents and neighbors went to police with concerns about one of the men, who they claimed has been using a dog to lure children into his home.
Woodbridge Township Police and county officials are conducting a complete investigation into the allegations, said Mayor Pelzman.
“It appears that the current notification process in New Jersey from state to county to municipality is ineffective,” said Mayor Pelzman. “We receive a list of sex offenders living in our community but then must wait for authorization to make the names public. This certainly defeats the purpose of Megan’s Law that the state has created to give residents timely information about sex offenders living in their midst.”
Mayor Pelzman vows to fight for changes in the notification process. “We have contacted Senator Vitale and our Assemblymen John Wisniewski and Joseph Vas to enact remedial legislation to ensure the safety of our children and their families.”
