Information Day Offers Vital Health, Consumer News
|
May 6, 2004
It's one of the great ironies of life: the older you get, the more you still need to learn, at least with regard to the complexities of healthcare.
Senior Information Day is designed to provide senior citizens with assistance in finding their way through the increasingly dense thicket of regulations, options and deadlines with regard to healthcare issues. Information will also be available on timely consumer topics such as telephone and internet scams, dealing with home repair contractors, the state's reverse mortgage program and other financial and safety matters.
The admission-free event occurs twice: May 14 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Woodbridge Health Center, 2 George Frederick Plaza, Woodbridge, and on May 27 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Evergreen Senior Center, 400 Inman Avenue, Colonia.
Modeled after the township's annual Mayor's Health Expo, Senior Information Day presents senior-oriented speakers and material focusing on prescription plans, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and insurance, as well as assistance for adult caregivers in selecting a nursing home or assisted living facility.
A Medication Assessment screening is available, whereby an individual can receive advice and counseling on their medication regimen; call 732-855-0600 ext. 5024 to register for the screening.
Senior Information Day is part of a month-long expanded outreach effort by Woodbridge Township Department of Health and Human Services in conjunction with national Senior Citizen Month.
"This year's Senior Citizen Month theme is Aging Well, Living Well," says Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. "With events like Senior Information Day, the township is able to make sure our seniors have up-to-date information about medical services and other quality-of-life concerns."
Other health-related Senior Citizen Month events sponsored by the Health Department include blood pressure screening, stroke assessment and a fall prevention program. Call 732-855-0600 ext. 5011 for details.
Throughout the year, Woodbridge Township Department of Health offers regular medical screenings, seminars and outreach efforts including the COPSA program (Comprehensive Services on Aging) specializing in assistance with mental health issues. These efforts are enhanced during Senior Citizen Month.
"Woodbridge has one of the largest and most active senior populations in New Jersey," says Mayor Pelzman. "The staff and volunteers at our Health Department, Division on Aging and Multi-Service Program on Aging do a terrific job year-round helping seniors maintain their independence and ability to contribute to the community."
