One man’s dream of a better future for seniors has expanded beyond Woodbridge to encompass all of New Jersey.
In his January State of the Township address, Woodbridge TownshipMayor Frank G. Pelzman vowed to petition the State for legislation that would provide aid to senior homeowners dealing with costly building permit.
Mayor Pelzman’s vision is one step closer to becoming reality.
On Mar. 20 Sen. Joseph Vitale (D-Middlesex) introduced into the New Jersey Senate the “Senior Permit Exemption” bill that allows municipalities to grant an exemption from all municipal building permit fees for any senior citizen improving the house he or she owns and occupies. The bill amends the provisions of the current State Uniform Construction Code Act.
Asm. John Wisniewski (D-Middlesex) has agreed to introduce the bill in the Assembly.
A press conference explaining the law and its expected impact is set for Tuesday, Mar. 28 at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Senior Center, 400 Inman Avenue in Colonia.
“This law gives an additional incentive to residents over age 62 to reinvest in their single family home,” says Mayor Pelzman. “It is important that seniors have a chance to enjoy the comfort of their home as they enter their retirement years.”
More importantly, adds Mayor Pelzman, the program will help boost property values. “Relief from permit fees gives them more money to budget toward repair,” he says.
Sen. Vitale says he was delighted when Mayor Pelzman brought him the Senior Permit Exemption idea. “This says to our residents that their hometown administration has the necessary vision and leadership to positively impact their lives.”
