Woodbridge Recycling Savings Estimated at $600,000

Mayor: Streamlined separation process provides “major savings”

In an era of strained municipal budgets, Woodbridge Township has found a way to minimize service costs by streamlining its recycling process, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.

Starting the first week of January, commingled recyclables picked up curbside by Township sanitation workers will go directly to the Township’s recycling vendor, Turnpike Recycling of Carteret. Commingled recyclables include plastic, glass and aluminum/metal containers.

Currently, commingled recyclables are picked up and taken to the Township’s Public Works center in Keasbey for manual separation, then sent to a recycling service. Newspaper and mixed paper pickups already go directly from curbside pickup to Turnpike Recycling.

Township officials estimate the change will save approximately $600,000.

“Giving residents the most benefit for the least amount of tax dollars is an objective this administration works to accomplish every day,” says Mayor Pelzman. “This is a major savings in a critical budget area.”
