MAYOR JOHN E. McCORMAC ANNOUNCES TOWNSHIP TO UPGRADE PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE EQUIPMENT… PROGRAM GEARED TO REDUCE COSTS THROUGH REPAIR & MAINTENANCE OF TOWNSHIP INFRASTRUCTURE

March 26, 2007

Maintenance & Repair of Municipal Parking Lots and Neighborhood Streets to Be Undertaken By Public Works

As part of a continuing effort to consolidate costs and provide better and more responsive municipal services, Woodbridge Township Mayor John E. McCormac today a nnounced that he has asked the Municipal Council to approve the purchase of new and upgraded construction and paving equipment for the Department of Public Works. The new equipment will allow the Department of Public Works to maintain and repair municipal infrastructure such as driveways, parking lots, and smaller neighborhood streets, thereby reducing the need to pay higher subcontractor expenses.

“In reviewing municipal operations, one of the more significant recurring costs was the repair and repaving of municipal infrastructure such as parking lots and smaller streets,” Mayor McCormac said. “As part of the effort to control municipal expenses, the Department of Public Works will now be able to do the repaving and repairing of parking lots at our municipal lots, libraries, and school district facilities as well as smaller neighborhood streets. The end result will be a more efficient repaving program that will lead to more streets being repaved quicker and at a reduction in cost.”

Mayor McCormac said that approximately $529,000 has been allocated to purchase new and upgraded construction and paving equipment to include:

Additionally, Public Works employees are being trained in the operation of heavy equipment. The goal of the program is to reduce the cost of maintaining municipal infrastructure by eliminating the need to subcontract much of the repaving work that can be accomplished by the Department of Public Works. While the program may take several years to get fully implemented, the immediate plan will serve to consolidate services and ultimately reduce costs, Mayor McCormac said.

“As I travel through each community whether it’s Avenel, Colonia, Fords, Hopelawn, Iselin, Keasbey, Menlo Park Terrace, Port Reading, Sewaren, or Woodbridge speaking to residents, the most significant and often mentioned issue is the need to maintain and repave our neighborhood streets. This program will position the Township to better maintain and repair streets and parking lots and, over the long-term, we expect to see a reduction in paving and maintenance costs,” Mayor McCormac said.

“The Municipal Council has explored the repaving program with the Mayor and the Administration and is convinced that that there will be ultimate cost-savings. More importantly, the Department of Public Works will now be equipped to do the work needed to maintain our streets and lots,” said Councilman James Carroll.
