Woodbridge Marks Public Health Week with Clinics, Educational Outreach

Mayor Cites Ongoing Need for Early Detection of Preventable Illness

 

Woodbridge Township will mark National Public Health Week with a broad range of health outreach programs, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.

National Public Health Week runs April 4-10 and is sponsored by the American Public Health Association, the world’s oldest and largest organization of public health professionals in the world, representing more than 50,000 members from over 50 public health occupations . This year’s National Public Health Week theme is “Empowering Americans to Live Stronger, Longer”.

A Diabetes Screening Day will be sponsored by Iselin Pharmacy and Friendly Drug’s Diabetes Shoppe® in cooperation with the Woodbridge Health and Human Services Department. The free clinic takes place April 4 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Iselin Pharmacy, 1186 Green Street, Iselin. Anyone may walk in and receive a blood glucose test along with consultation on diabetes risks and treatment.For more information call Iselin Pharmacy at (732) 283-1111.

Starting April 7, The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, 458 Amboy Avenue, Woodbridge, will offer free blood-glucose meter checks every Thursday thereafter.Anyone may walk in and have theirmeter examined for accuracy and efficiency. For more information call The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy at (732) 636-0011.

“We are pleased to have local pharmacists help promote Public Health Week in this way,” says Mayor Pelzman. “Diabetes is a disease that can disguise itself with several symptoms, so frequent testing and early detection are essential.”

On April 9 at 9:30 a.m. the first monthly “Walk Down Main Street” will take place, with the public invited to meet at Town Hall for a leisurely stroll through downtown Woodbridge. Co-sponsored by the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey, “Walk Down Main Street” is the opening event of the Township’s “Crossroads to Health Initiative”, a comprehensive health education outreach program.

A showcase display highlighting the Township’s current public health programs and various health education materials and information will also be located at the lower level of the Woodbridge Main Library throughout April.
