Woodbridge Promotes First Female Police Captain

July 31, 2006

The Woodbridge Township Police Department will promote two officers to the rank of captain, including the department’s first female officer to achieve that rank, Interim Mayor Joseph F. Vitale and Police Chief William Trenery have announced.

The promotion ceremony takes place Thursday, August 3 at 2 p.m. in the Municipal Court Chambers at Town Hall, 1 Main Street, Woodbridge, New Jersey.

Lieutenant Margaret Schmidt-Fuller and Lieutenant R. Scott Kuzma will be promoted to Captain.

“These officers and their distinguished service careers are examples of why this is the finest police department in the state,” says Mayor Vitale. “In assuming their new responsibilities, they will extend the proud tradition of the Woodbridge Police Department and make our fully accredited department even stronger.”

Lt. Schmidt-Fuller is a 19-year veteran of the force and holds a B.S. Degree in Public Administration-Criminal Justice from Kean University. She oversees the department’s in-service domestic violence crisis training and supervises the Township’s volunteer Domestic Violence Response Team, the oldest such team in Middlesex County.

Lt. Kuzma is a 15-year veteran of the Woodbridge PD and holds a B.S. in Criminal Justice-Political Science from Jersey City State College and an M.A. in Education from Seton Hall University. He supervises the Police Training Unit and is responsible for all aspects of training for the department’s sworn officers and civilian employees.

“Both these officers have risen through the ranks,” says Chief Trenery. “Their extensive training and range of experience will be a great asset at their new positions.”
