Party Dolls Bring Girl Group Sound to Woodbridge Aug. 7

July 31, 2006

The best of the classic Girl Group Sound comes to Woodbridge August 7 as the Mayor’s Summer Concert Series presents The Party Dolls.

The free concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the meadow behind Woodbridge High School. Audience members are urged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, and refreshments are available in the food court. Call (732) 596-4048 for information. Woodbridge Center and ShopRite are the prime series sponsors.

Named after the #1, million-selling 1957 hit record Party Doll by Texas rockabilly legend Buddy Knox, the vocal trio of Alison Koster, Gladys Bryant and Darlene White perform the best dance/party songs of all time, with a repertoire extending from Doo-Wop and Motown through Disco and New Wave to current hits by Sheryl Crow, Shania Twain, Madonna and Christine Aguilera.

“We are thrilled to have the Party Dolls return to the Mayor’s Summer Concert Series,” says Interim Mayor Joseph F. Vitale. “This is a band that delivers a solid 90 minutes of classic rock ’n’ roll with some of the best musicianship in the business.”

The Party Dolls not only sing but deliver a mind-boggling fashion statement – several statements, in fact, over the course of the night, ranging from mini-skirts and go-go boots to hip huggers, bell bottoms, short-shorts and other pop clothing styles highlighted by an astonishing array of period wigs that send the audience on a time-travel journey down Music Memory Lane.

Formed in 1990 as a tribute to the 1960s’ Girl Groups, the Party Dolls have expanded into a first-rate touring ensemble that performs over 200 shows a year throughout the U.S. The main vocal trio is backed by a tight four-piece unit of bass, guitar, keyboards and drums with a stage repertoire of over 100 songs spanning 50 years of American Pop. The Party Dolls have recorded four CDs, including a highly regarded Christmas album done in their inimitable style.

The Mayor’s Summer Concert Series not only nourishes musical appetites but helps sustain the coffers at the Woodbridge Food Bank. Concertgoers bringing non-perishable food items receive a chance to win special prizes, one chance for every item donated. “Summer months always put a strain on local food pantries,” says Mayor Vitale. “Each year, the generous people of Woodbridge donate an incredible amount of food during the series, and we hope this continues.”

2006 Mayor’s Summer Concert Series Schedule: August 14 – The Duprees. . . August 21 – Joey Dee & The Starliters. . . August 28 – Brooklyn Reunion Show featuring Classic, Mystics & Passions
