New York City Swing share bill with Jobonnano’s Godsons of Soul
The glory days of rock ’n’ roll are back again in Woodbridge as the Mayor’s Summer Concert Series continues July 18 with an appearance by New York City Swing and Jo Bonnano’s Godsons of Soul.
The free concerts occur Monday nights from July 11-August 29 on the grass fields behind Woodbridge High School. Woodbridge Center and ShopRite are the prime series sponsors. The New York City Swing and Jo Bonnano’s Godsons of Soul show is sponsored by Siemens.
Festivities begin with a disc jockey at 6 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. start for the concerts. Audience members are urged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, and refreshments are available in the food court.
“We are thrilled to have these two groups debut in Woodbridge,” said Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. “This is a show that will have the audience on their feet from start to finish.”
New York City Swing is a 13-piece, horn-based outfit with a diverse repertoire spanning seven decades of hits from the 1940s to 2005. The band’s versatility has made them one of the region’s top big-event ensembles, recently performing at the weddings of Sopranos star Jamie Lynn Sigler and Spin City’s Richard Kind.
For the past 10 years Jo Bonnano’s Godsons of Soul has been electrifying the area’s rock clubs and concert halls with its infectious, high-energy rock and soul. Celebrating the release of their new CD, Turn Up the Heat, the Godsons of Soul are headliners at the annual Light of Day concerts in Asbury Park.
The Mayor’s Summer Concert Series not only nourishes musical appetites but helps sustain the coffers at the Woodbridge Food Bank. Concertgoers bringing non-perishable food items receive a chance to win special prizes, one chance for every item donated. “Summer months always put a strain on local food pantries,” says Mayor Pelzman. “Last year, the generous people of Woodbridge donated an incredible amount of food during the series. We’re hoping to repeat that this year.”
The 2005 Mayor’s Summer Concert Series schedule:
● July 25 – The Infernos ● August 1 – Jukebox Heroes ● August 8 – Frankie Lymon’s Teenagers
● August 15 – Brooklyn Reunion Show featuring Classics, Passions & Mystics
● August 22 – Kenny Vance’s Planotones ● August 29 – The Greaseband
