Implementation of the $4.2 million road and streetscape improvements to New Brunswick Avenue in Fords is set to begin this month, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Wed. Oct. 13 at 9:30 a.m. in the lot between 472-482 New Brunswick Avenue.

The project will be funded entirely by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders. “My thanks to the Freeholders for making this possible,” said Mayor Pelzman. “Their commitment will enable us to beautify the Fords Business District and make it much easier to travel on New Brunswick Avenue.”

The project will involve the widening and resurfacing of New Brunswick Avenue, as well as new curbs, new sidewalks, brick pavers, curb ramps for the handicapped and improvements to the intersection at Crows Mill Road. The work will encompass the part of New Brunswick Avenue that runs from Ford Avenue to Route 440.

“This project will be a tremendous boost to the Fords Downtown Business District,” said Council President Richard Dalina, who represents Fords. “The improved roadway will revitalize the economy of that area.”

“A vibrant business district adds economic vitality to any town,” said Council Vice-President James Carroll, a Fords resident. “Improving New Brunswick Avenue is a major step toward revitalizing the Fords Business District.”

“The improvements to New Brunswick Avenue will be a great thing for the people of Fords,” said Freeholder Deputy Director Stephen “Pete” Dalina, also a Fords resident. “It will entice shoppers to come to Fords and support the businesses along the Avenue.”
