Mayor cites importance of improvements in Township’s commercial hubs
Woodbridge Township ’s two-year program to enhance its commercial streetscapes concludes this week on New Brunswick Avenue in Fords.
Mayor Frank G. Pelzman and Middlesex County Freeholder Deputy Director Stephen “Pete” Dalina will preside over the installation of decorative sidewalk banners along the New Brunswick Avenue commercial district.
The installation takes place at 10 a.m., Thursday, April 13, in front of Villa Borghese at 426 New Brunswick Avenue.
The improvements were funded by a $75,000 grant from the Middlesex County Downtown and Business District Improvement Fund that allowed for purchase and installation of street furniture such as planters, flags, banners, trash receptacles and benches.
The furniture was installed along Oak Tree Road in Iselin, Inman Avenue in Colonia, Main Street in Woodbridge and New Brunswick Avenue in Fords.
“This is a fitting and symbolic close to a larger rehabilitation project that is already paying dividends to businesses and residents,” says Mayor Pelzman, referring to the recently finished $4.2 million road and sidewalk reconstruction along New Brunswick Avenue from Ford Avenue to Route 440 also funded by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders .
Planners believe the project will prove a tremendous boost to the district. “The improved roadway will revitalize the economy of the entire neighborhood,” says 2 nd Ward Councilman Richard Dalina, who represents Fords.
Freeholder Stephen “Pete” Dalina agrees. “Besides providing comfort to shoppers and pedestrians, public amenities of this kind contribute to a greater sense of community pride,” he says. “When citizens see local government making improvements in their neighborhood’s appearance, it creates a better business climate overall.”
The New Brunswick Avenue project comes on the heels of the Phase 1 completion of the Township’s comprehensive road repair program that resurfaced 53 thorofares in four months. Phase 2 of the road repair program will begin this summer.
