Nov. 28, 2005

NJ Transit funding will reimburse County for lane additions, widening

Middlesex County will be reimbursed by New Jersey Transit for the $1.8 million the county will spend to improve three busy MetroPark intersections, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced .

New Jersey Transit is issuing the funds to reimburse Middlesex County for work to be completed at Route 27 and Wood Avenue, Wood Avenue and Thornall Street/Middlesex-Essex Turnpike and Gill Lane and Middlesex-Essex Turnpike. The work includes lane widening and construction of special turn lanes.

“This upgrade will significantly enhance the safety of several thousand motorists on their daily commute to and from MetroPark as well as residents going through the area,” says Mayor Pelzman, “Our thanks go to Freeholder Director David Crabiel and the Middlesex County Board of ChosenFreeholders for enabling these critical road projects to be funded and accomplished.”

Township Council Vice President Patricia Osborne applauds the funding commitment. “MetroPark is one of the Township’s largest traffic magnets,” she says. “These improvements will help mobility keep up with growth.”

The $1.8 million comes as an addition to the $1.7 million New Jersey Transit has paid the County for work already completed on the project.

4 th Ward Councilman James Major says he is pleased to see the work go forth. “This came about from a partnership among several entities, from the state DOT and New Jersey Transit to the County Freeholders and Township officials.”
