Mayor’s Trophy Billiards Match: Woodbridge vs. Perth Amboy Seniors Compete

Woodbridge will be the site of the 1 st Annual Mayor’s Trophy Billiards Match between senior billiards clubs from Woodbridge and Perth Amboy.
Mayor Frank G. Pelzman and the Woodbridge Township Senior Billiards Club will host the 8-ball tournament Thursday, Oct. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Woodbridge Community Center , 600 Main Street, Woodbridge. Perth Amboy Mayor and State Assemblyman Joseph Vas is a co-sponsor and will join Mayor Pelzman in attending – and possibly shooting an exhibition round or two.
The winner of the match will keep the inscribed trophy cup for one year before returning to compete in Perth Amboy in 2006.
The Woodbridge Township Senior Billiards Club formed in 2003 as a way for seniors to become more involved with the Township’s new community center. The club has two competition teams that take on other senior billiard groups throughout Central Jersey. In 2004, the club brought in international billiards champion and ESPN commentator Allen Hopkins for a trick-shot exhibition and educational seminar.
“The senior billiards club has been a great asset to the recreation options of our Township seniors,” says Mayor Pelzman. “These folks have become dedicated ambassadors of good will and sportsmanship.”
Indeed, the competition level among the senior chalk-and-cue artists is as intense as any you’ll encounter on the pro billiards circuit. “We are inaugurating this trophy match between Woodbridge and Perth Amboy because of the storied athletic history between the two municipalities,” says Woodbridge Township Senior Billiards Club President Pat Trombetta.
