Woodbridge Library Gala Concludes 40th Annual “Summer Reading Club”

August 24, 2005

Mayor Cites Program’s Importance as Literacy Aid; “Medieval Faire” Wrap-up Set for Aug. 27

The Woodbridge Public Library’s 40 th Annual Summer Reading Club concludes with a free gala Medieval Faire Saturday Aug. 27 from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Main Library, George Frederick Plaza in Woodbridge.

The historical trappings mirror the club’s 2005 theme – “Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds” – portraying reading as a thrilling adventure into the unknown.

Sponsored nationally by the American Library Association, Summer Reading Club is part of a 32-state collaborative effort. The Woodbridge Public Library has featured the Club since 1966. “This has always been one of our most popular programs,” says Library Director John Hurley. “Many of the students come back year after year.”

Ask any of the more than 2,500 youthful participants, and they’ll emphasize the Club’s purely fun dimension that offers a daily diet of arts and crafts, story times, entertainment and prizes along with access to a superb collection of children’s and young adult reading materials.

“This program is a vital aid to literacy,” says Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. “It not only helps children maintain the reading level they attained during the school year, it makes them better prepared for instruction when they return to school in the Fall.”

With the fall school term looming, Saturday’s Medieval Faire is a welcome way to look back on a summer of reading pleasure. For registration information call 732-634-4450 ext. 225.
