WHAT: Woodbridge Library Welcomes “Animal Reading Pals”
Innovative Program Seeks to Foster Literacy
among Young Readers
WHEN: Tuesday, September 27, 7-8 p.m.
WHERE: Henry Inman Branch Library – 607 Inman Ave. in Colonia
Students, your reading assignment today will be heard by Marbles, Cuddles, Velvet and Duke. If you do well, they’ll reward you with a lick and maybe a purr.
The Woodbridge Public Library has begun to offer the nationally acclaimed Read to a Dog Or a Cat program that helps children refine their reading skills in the presence of an “animal auditor”. On September 27 at the Henry Inman Branch Library from 7-8 p.m. children ages 8 to 12 can read for 15 minutes to dogs and cats provided by TheraPet, Inc. of Clark. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
The concept was developed in 1999 by librarians in Salt Lake City, Utah, as a response to studies showing that a child’s reading achievement may be hindered by fear of criticism. Having a child read to a non-critical, non-judgmental animal that appears to listen attentively creates a positive experience for the child, who comes to associate reading as an enjoyable and desirable activity.
“We are delighted our Township library system is utilizing this innovative programming,” says Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. “Literacy is such an important skill that we must use every means possible to encourage it.”
John Hurley, Woodbridge Township Library Director says the animals are certified therapy pets who are employed in many public situations. “These animals love kids and have an excellent temperament for public venues,” he says. “They present a demeanor that is very supportive.”
Two cats, two Labrador retrievers and a Keeshond will be on hand to serve as auditors. “Any child at any reading level is welcome,” says Henry Inman Branch Librarian Marsha Quackenbush. “The children will be able to pet and interact with the animals as well as read to them.”
