Then, then, remember then!

Music lovers from 8 to 80 will “Re-mem-mem, re-mem-mem-mem-ber” the glory days of rock ’n’ roll in Woodbridge August 16 when the Mayor’s Summer Concert Series presents Larry Chance & The Earls, the group that created a bass vocal line immortalizing the doo-wop sound like no other.

The free concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. on the grass fields behind Woodbridge High School. Sansone’s Route 1 Auto Mall is the prime series sponsor, with secondary sponsorship by ShopRite. Sponsor for the Larry Chance & The Earls concert is Commerce Bank.

“We are thrilled to have Larry Chance & The Earls,” said Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. “This is a band with a truly original sound that helped define the heart and soul of classic rock’n’roll.”

Larry Chance & The Earls began as the Bronx-based High-Hatters in 1957. By 1960 the group had evolved into a potent, swinging ensemble that would record several hits during the ’60s: Life Is But a Dream, Looking for My Baby, Eyes, Kissing, I Believe, Never and the anthemic, unforgettable Remember Then.

From its percolating “Re-mem-mem, re-mem-mem-member” bass intro to Larry’s soaring lead, the song proved to be a high energy chart-topper, climbing to #24 nationally by early 1963. An exuberant, bittersweet paean to lost love, Remember Then has won a lasting place in pop music history.

The Mayor’s Summer Concert Series not only nourishes musical appetites but helps sustain the coffers at the Woodbridge Food Bank. Concertgoers are asked to bring non-perishable food items for deposit in special collection bins. “Summer months always put a strain on local food pantries,” says Mayor Pelzman. “Last year, the generous people of Woodbridge donated an incredible amount of food during the series.”

Festivities begin with disc jockey Bruce Banko & Night Moves at 6 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. start for the concerts. Audience members are urged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, and refreshments are available in the food court.

The 2004 Mayor’s Summer Concert Series schedule continues through August with Cornell Gunter’s Coasters (Aug. 23) and Party Dolls (Aug. 30).
