Firefighters Receive Award for 50 Years of Muscular Dystrophy Fundraising
|
April 13, 2004
WHAT: Mayor Frank G. Pelzman awards a special proclamation honoring Local 290, International Association of Firefighters, for IAFF's 50 years of fundraising on behalf of the National Muscular Dystrophy Association
WHEN: Thursday, April 15, 3:00 p.m.
WHERE: Municipal Building Plaza, 1 Main Street, Woodbridge
WHY: "The residents of Woodbridge Township owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the brave, dedicated firefighters who serve the community with distinction in a multitude of ways," says Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. "The IAFF's half-century commitment to the Muscular Dystrophy Association is a special inspiration for everyone involved in charitable fundraising."
Firefighters' service to the community goes beyond heroics. Sometimes it is as simple as standing at an intersection with a fundraising boot in hand or taking the time to organize a Christmas party for needy children - simple, perhaps, but no less important to us all.
Since its inception in 1929, Local 290 (representing firefighters from Woodbridge, Fords, Port Reading) has been at the forefront of campaigns to support numerous community causes, among them the Peter F. Smith Scholarship Fund, St. Barnabas Burn Foundation, Kiddie Keep Well Summer Camp and Woodbridge Township Food Bank, along with education programs for grade schools, purchasing fans for senior citizens, aiding numerous youth athletic associations and establishing the emergency medical first responder program.
