Woodbridge Gets NJDOT Funds for Highway-Rail Crossing Upgrade

June 28, 2004

Homestead Avenue from Essex to Blair closed for repairs July 17-19

Woodbridge Township has received New Jersey Department of Transportation funding for a project to rehabilitate the existing highway-rail grade crossing on Homestead Avenue in Avenel, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.

The work will be undertaken starting at 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, and is set to be completed by 6 p.m. on Monday, July 19. Due to the nature of the repairs, the crossing will be closed to all traffic the entire weekend. Detours will be provided and clearly marked with appropriate signs.

"We are pleased that this project is being handled by NJDOT with expediency," says Mayor Pelzman. "Residents in the area will be happy to see a permanent improvement in the traffic flow around the crossing."

The upgrade will entail complete removal of the existing deteriorated grade crossing with the construction of a new grade crossing with continually welded track. Homestead Avenue will be re-surfaced adjacent to the crossing, and pavement markings will be renewed using long-life thermoplastic materials.
