Mayor Frank G. Pelzman wants to make sure Woodbridge Township residents are aware of the changes in the state’s helmet law recently put into effect.
Effective Mar. 1, 2006, young people under the age of 17 are required to wear an approved helmet when cycling, roller skating, in-line skating or skateboarding. The law had previously applied to riders under age 14.
“Head injury is the most serious injury resulting from bicycle accidents and a frequent cause of death,” says Mayor Pelzman. “We believe this new state law will protect our children and also serve as a reminder to motorists to be on the lookout for young people bicycling and skating in the street.”
According to the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, many bicycle deaths result from bicycle-motor vehicle collisions. However, injuries can happen anywhere – parks, bike paths and driveways – and often do not involve motor vehicles.
The most severe injuries are those to the brain that cause permanent damage. Bicycle helmets can prevent or diminish the severity of these injuries. The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute estimates 85 percent of bicyclists’ head injuries can be prevented by a helmet.
