TOWNSHIP LAUNCHES FOOD DRIVE

January 5, 2004

The "Have A Heart" Food Drive for the needy of Woodbridge Township is now underway, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman and Health Director Patrick O. Hanson have announced. "Have A Heart" is the post-holiday food collection effort, designed to restock the food distribution centers after the holiday season. It was established in 1995 to address the problem of a traditionally low post-holiday food supply. "We are asking people to continue the tradition of giving, even though the holiday season is over," Mr. Hanson said. "Have a Heart," so named because it runs through Valentine's Day, is organized by the Woodbridge Department of Health and Human Services and the "We Feed" Woodbridge Food Bank Committee. The food is disbursed through distribution centers at St. James Church, St. Cecelia's Church, First Congregational Church, First Presbyterian Church of Avenel, First Presbyterian Church of Iselin, First Presbyterian Church of Woodbridge, Trinity Church, and Congregation Adath Israel of Woodbridge. "It is so important to keep the food pantries well-stocked for those in our township who need it," said Mayor Pelzman. "The need is not only there during the holidays, but throughout the year." Individuals interested in contributing to the food drive may bring non-perishables to the Woodbridge Public Health Center, 2 George Frederick Plaza, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. weekdays through Friday, February 13, 2004. Food receptacles have also been placed in the Woodbridge Municipal Building at 1 Main Street, the Department of Public Works garage on Smith Street in Keasbey, and the Woodbridge Main Library. Last year, some 7,500 pounds of food were collected during the "Have a Heart" campaign.
