Motorists leaving busy Metropark Station will now be able to head southbound on the Garden State Parkway with greater ease and efficiency, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.

Interchange 131B will be formally opened this Thursday at 1:30 p.m. by Mayor Pelzman, Assemblyman John Wisniewski, New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere and other officials of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.

“We greatly appreciate this funding commitment by the State,” says Mayor Pelzman. “The addition of this ramp will do a lot to help prevent congestion from building up in what is already a traffic-intensive area.”

As a depot for Amtrak and New Jersey Transit train and bus lines, Metropark Station is one of the most active transportation hubs in the Northeastern U.S. with more than four million riders using the facility each year. “We have long needed an additional exit route to assist commuters driving from the station,” says Mayor Pelzman. “This new interchange provides flexibility and safety for commuters as well as nearby residents.”

In addition to the grading, drainage, paving and structural work needed to create the interchange, the project included widening the southbound Garden State Parkway bridge over the South Branch of the Rahway River.

“The Department of Transportation listened to the desires of our residents and responded with a well-planned, well-placed solution,” says Mayor Pelzman.
