Woodbridge Presents “GospelFest 2005” Feb. 25

January 28, 2005

Top Vocal Groups Lead Musical Homage to Black History Month

Woodbridge Township will celebrate Black History Month Feb. 25 with GospelFest 2005, a rousing evocation of heritage through spirit and song.

The admission-free gospel music extravaganza kicks off at 8 p.m. in the spacious main sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Woodbridge, 130 Sewaren Ave. in Sewaren. Featured performers are The First Baptist Church Mass Choir and The Mellow-Aires, a nationally renowned ensemble from Trenton.

“Our concert last year was a tremendous success,” says Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. “GospelFest is an event that brings the community together in a joyous expression of faith and music.”

The Mellow-Aires formed in 1982 and have toured with The Williams Brothers, Mighty Clouds of Joy, Violinaires, Lumzy Sisters and other top gospel artists. A smooth blend of traditional quartet style and contemporary R&B influences, the Mellow-Aires’ signature sound is expertly showcased on their latest CD, Back to Basics, that includes unique renditions of gospel classics Precious Lord, Amazing Grace, Walk With Me, Look Where He Brought Me From and other tributes to legendary composers and performers such as the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Douglas Miller, Walter Hawkins, Soul Stirrers and the dean of modern gospel music, Dr. Thomas Dorsey.

The 20-voice First Baptist Church Mass Choir is led by keyboardist/conductor Robert Arrington and features a strong choral sound supporting several dynamic soloists.

GospelFest 2005 is presented by The Barron Arts Center and sponsored by the Woodbridge Township Arts Council and Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. Call 732-634-0413 for more information.
