New Food Facts” Key to Healthier Diet Choices, Increased Disease Prevention
Woodbridge Township will mark National Nutrition Month with a free seminar explaining the new federal dietary guidelines, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.
The Woodbridge Township Health Department will present a free “New Food Facts” seminar Mar. 21 at 10 a.m. at the Health Center, 2 George Frederick Plaza, Woodbridge. To register, call (732) 855-0600 ext. 5024.
Dietary Guidelines for Americans is published every 5 years by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Guidelines provide the latest scientific findings on how good dietary habits can promote health and reduce risk for major chronic diseases. The 2005 edition includes important information on changes in the types of food Americans eat, recommended exercise routines, food safety techniques and more.
“ Good nutrition is vital to good health and is absolutely essential for the healthy growth and development of children and adolescents,” says Mayor Pelzman. “Understanding the Guidelines will help Americans make smart choices about food and physical activity so they can have healthier lives.”
National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored each March by the American Dietetic Association. The campaign is designed to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
“Eating right is about more than losing or gaining weight,” says Woodbridge Township Health Director Dennis Green. “Studies show that nutritional deficiencies and imbalances are directly linked to a wide range of preventable illness, from high blood pressure and heart disease to osteoporosis and diabetes. We hope the New Food Facts seminar will give residents the knowledge they need for good health.”
