Woodbridge Marks National Fire Prevention Week with Safety Clinics

Oct. 5, 2005

Mayor Cites Ongoing Need for Fire Safety Awareness, Education

Woodbridge Township will mark National Fire Prevention Week with a broad range of public education programs and a special Mayoral Proclamation, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.

National Fire Prevention Week 2005 runs October 9-15 and is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association. This year’s special focus theme is “Use Candles with Care”.

Several of the professional and volunteer fire companies serving Woodbridge Township host open houses during the week that draw members of the public and visiting school classes.

“Basic knowledge of fire prevention is something everyone should possess, especially children,” says Mayor Pelzman. “The National Fire Prevention Week open houses are invaluable because they teach hands-on safety methods that will result in saving property and lives.”

In November, 2004, Woodbridge Fire Department initiated an Adopt-a-School Reading Program that provides fire prevention instruction to grades K-3 in Township schools. “Our fire safety educators read a story to the students, then give a homework assignment that has the children survey the fire safety equipment at home,” says Lt. Bryan DeLisi. “When we visit again, we collect the results, review them and see what households appear to need fire safety equipment. It is a good way to get families talking together about fire safety.”

Before the 7 p.m. Council meeting on Oct. 5, Mayor Pelzman will issue a proclamation recognizing the contributions of local fire companies to National Fire Prevention week. “ Woodbridge Township is fortunate to have the services of numerous highly-skilled and dedicated individuals who staff fire companies throughout the Township,” says Mayor Pelzman.
