Woodbridge Announces Fall Food Drive

Sept. 21, 2006

Mayor Praises Community Generosity, Cites Need for Continued Support

Interim Mayor Joseph F. Vitale has announced a Fall Food Drive for Woodbridge Township.

Mayor Vitale says that at the September meeting of the Woodbridge Township Food Bank Committee, several local pantries reported that food supplies were unusually low due to an increase in requests by Woodbridge residents.

“This is something that requires our immediate attention,” says Mayor Vitale. “We are kicking off a Fall Food Drive to help replenish food supplies at those pantries.”

Food collection barrels have been placed at Woodbridge Town Hall, Woodbridge Community Center, Woodbridge Health Centerand Evergreen Senior Center.

All canned goods and non-perishables are welcome, says Peter Barcellona, Food Bank Committee Chairman. Items currently most needed are: peanut butter and jelly, pancake mix and syrup, cereals, tuna, rice, canned fruit and meats, instant potatoes, spaghetti sauce, pasta and canned pasta, Jell-O, paper products, juices.

“It is crucial that we keep the food pantries well-stocked going into the winter months,” says Mayor Vitale.

According to a recent New Jersey Anti-Hunger Coalition report, approximately 750,000 New Jersey residents – 8.6 percent of all New Jersey households – are at some time during the year uncertain of having, or unable to acquire, enough food to meet minimum daily nutrition requirements.
