Mayor Lauds Team’s Role in Serving Community
Woodbridge Township’s Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) is seeking new members, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman announced today.
The DVRT is a volunteer organization that assists victims of domestic violence. Anyone interested in joining the team should call (732) 634-4500 ext. 2802.
Applicants will be asked to fill out an application form and undertake an interview and criminal background check. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and have transportation to police headquarters for assistance calls.
The Woodbridge Township DVRT began in 1993 and is the oldest domestic violence response unit in Middlesex County. Annually, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman and the Woodbridge Township Council issue a special proclamation declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Woodbridge and citing the team’s vital role among the Township’s service groups.
“ The impact of domestic violence is wide-ranging and affects not only individuals but many other elements of society,” says Mayor Pelzman. “Our Domestic Violence Response Team is an invaluable aid to residents and the police.”
The National DomesticViolence Hotline reports it has received more than one million calls for assistance since 1996. According to the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General’s 2003 Uniform Crime Report, there were 77,567 domestic violence offenses reported by New Jersey police in 2003. In Middlesex County during 2003, there were 2,831 domestic violence arrests.
