The Dubs & 1910 Fruitgum Company Set for Woodbridge July 17
|
July 12, 2006
Original Doo Wop and Bubblegum stylists combine for night of good time sounds
“We are thrilled to have these groups perform in Woodbridge,” says ActingMayor Patricia Osborne. “This is a show that will have the audience on their feet from start to finish.”
The Dubs originated in Harlem in 1955 and made an immediate and lasting impression with hits like “Could This Be Magic”, “Don’t Ask Me To Be Lonely”, “Be Sure My Love” and “Chapel of Dreams”. This is doo wop roots at its rootsiest, and the current Dubs lineup features original member Cleveland Still. The group’s latest Canaan Lake CD, Bringing in the Magic, presents a panorama of their timeless harmonies.
The 1910 Fruitgum Company exploded onto the pop music scene in 1968 from Linden, New Jersey, with their first single “Simon Says” reaching #2 on the U. The glory days of rock ’n’ roll are back again in Woodbridge as the Mayor’s Summer Concert Series continues July 17 with an exciting double bill featuring The Dubs and 1910 Fruitgum Company.
The free concert takes place in the meadow behind Woodbridge High School. Woodbridge Center and ShopRite are the prime series sponsors. The Dubs-1910 Fruitgum Company show is sponsored by Columbia Bank.
Festivities begin with a disc jockey at 6 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. start for the concerts. Audience members are urged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, and refreshments are available in the food court. For information call (732) 596-4048.S. charts and #1 in Britain. The group was a prime exponent of the Bubblegum Sound that fused ’50s doo wop lyrics with ’60s garage rock and created chart-toppers “1-2-3 Red Light”, “Indian Giver”, “Goody, Goody Gum Drops” and “May I Take a Giant Step”. The band’s newest recording, Movin’ On, contains renditions of their past hits as well as six new originals.
The Mayor’s Summer Concert Series not only nourishes musical appetites but helps sustain the coffers at the Woodbridge Food Bank. Concertgoers bringing non-perishable food items receive a chance to win special prizes, one chance for every item donated. “Summer months always put a strain on local food pantries,” says Acting Mayor Osborne. “Last year, the generous people of Woodbridge donated an incredible amount of food during the series. We’re hoping to repeat that this year.”
2006 Mayor’s Summer Concert Series Schedule: July 24 – The Infernos . . . July 31 – Jukebox Heroes. . . August 7 – Party Dolls. . . August 14 – The Duprees . . . August 21 – Joey Dee & The Starliters. . . August 28 – Brooklyn Reunion Show featuring Classic, Mystics & Passions
