Mayor Cites Ongoing Need to Upgrade First Responders’ Equipment

Woodbridge Township has received $102,000 from the State of New Jersey to help first responders acquire new equipment, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.

The money comes from a 2005 Domestic Preparedness Equipment Grant awarded by the Office of the Attorney General’s Department of Law and Public Safety. The funding was made available to states by the Office for Domestic Preparedness of the U.S. Department of Justice.

“We greatly appreciate this commitment by the Attorney General toward helping us improve our local emergency response capability,” says Mayor Pelzman. “Our police, fire and first aid units have taken on enormous responsibilities since Sept. 11, 2001. This grant will help us stay well-prepared and well-equipped for a wide range of potential emergencies.”

Walter Hanks , Director of the Township’s Office of Emergency Management, agrees. “Our first responders are always seeking new and better equipment. This grant will reimburse them for a wide range of essential items, from pagers and radios and computer software to gas detection meters, extrication saws and back boards and cervical collars to assist injured persons. It all adds up to being better prepared to save lives when the need arises.”
