October 22, 2005

Oct. 26 salon visit kicks off statewide domestic violence education program

New Jersey Governor Richard J. Codey will come to Woodbridge Oct. 26 to inaugurate the state’s participation in the Cut It Out domestic violence education program, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced.

Gov. Codey will hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m., Oct. 26, in front of Vito Mazza Salon, 114 Main Street, Woodbridge.

Mayor Pelzman and Sen. Joseph D. Vitale (D-19) will also speak, along with Jackie Mariash (Executive Director, Women Aware) and Barbara Price (Executive Director, New Jersey Coalition for Battered Women). Woodbridge TownshipCouncilwoman Caroline Erhlich will serve as moderator.

Cut It Out is a nationwide program of the Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund dedicated to mobilizing salon professionals and others to fight the epidemic of domestic abuse in communities across the United States.

“Many victims of domestic violence are unaware that there are resources out there to rescue them from physical harm and mental abuse at home,” says Gov. Codey.  “This public awareness campaign is crucial in reaching these victims to let them know that help is out there.”

On August 23, 2005, Gov. Codey signed legislation launching a statewide Domestic Violence Public Awareness Campaign that focuses on educating and empowering victims to put an end to the cycle of violence at home. The campaign will provide education on the causes and nature of domestic violence, risk factors and preventive measures.

Woodbridge Township has had a Domestic Violence Response Team since 1993, says Mayor Pelzman. “ The impact of domestic violence is wide-ranging and affects not only individuals but many other elements of society,” says Mayor Pelzman. “The Cut It Out program is an innovative effort that will reach many people with critical information that will save lives.”
