C-SPAN School Bus Comes to Woodbridge Aug. 18

August 16, 2004

Mayor Cites Media’s Important Role in Informing, Educating Public

Mayor Frank G. Pelzman will officially welcome the C-SPAN School Bus to Woodbridge on Wednesday, August 18 from 2-4 p.m. at the Woodbridge Community Center, 600 Main Street in Woodbridge.

Described as a “civics lesson on wheels”, the C-SPAN School Bus is a 45-foot, bright yellow custom coach specially outfitted with video monitors, computers and television equipment. Half the bus serves as a mobile classroom while the other half functions as a working production studio.

The public can tour the bus and meet the news staff that travels nationwide to produce C-SPAN’s award-winning programming of government, history, books and current events . The tours are free and no registration is required.

The “Election 2004” stop in Woodbridge was arranged by Comcast’s Government and Community Affairs Department. The visit will resemble a casual mid-day town meeting on Main Street as citizens mingle and converse near a visible reminder of their First Amendment freedoms.

“We are very pleased that Comcast has brought this unique educational vehicle to Woodbridge,” says Mayor Pelzman. “This is an excellent means of taking the political pulse of America in a crucial election year.”

A primary goal of the bus tour is to introduce teachers and students to C-SPAN as an instructional resource and to reinforce the public-service value of cable television.

“Comcast is excited to host the C-SPAN School Bus in North Jersey,” said Joe Fischer, Comcast Senior Regional Vice President. “We encourage our communities to take advantage of the opportunity to experience this fun and effective, hands-on educational tool. The C-SPAN School Bus is a great way to learn more about C-SPAN’s unique public affairs programming.”
