“We urge senior citizens and those with respiratory problems to take precautions in the extremely hot weather,” says Mayor Pelzman . “ Summer is an enjoyable season, but it can also be hazardous to your health.”
Heat stroke is the most dangerous of all the heat-related illnesses, experts state. Symptoms include body temperature of 106 degrees or higher, hot and dry skin, rapid and strong pulse and delirium.
The Woodbridge Health Center offers tips on staying cool during the heat:
— Avoid gardening or strenuous exercise during hot days
— Drink plenty of fluids, not too cold
— Avoid alcohol and caffeine
— Wear a hat outdoors or stay under an umbrella
— Eat light meals and do cooking at night for the next day
Mayor Pelzman suggests that residents look out for frail and elderly neighbors and family members during periods of intense heat. “If you know someone who may be at risk for heat stress, take a few minutes to check on that person now and again. You may be saving a life.”
