WHAT: Mayor Frank G. Pelzman Addresses “Community of Caring” Assembly

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 23 – 1:30-2:30 p.m.

WHERE: School # 4/5 – 230 Avenel Street, Avenel

Mayor Frank G. Pelzman will speak on Citizenship as part of a Community of Caring assembly Friday, Sept. 23 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at School #4/5, 230 Avenel Street in Avenel.

The assembly also features police instructors from D.A.R.E., officials from Washington Mutual Bank, representatives from Karate USA and parents of School #4/5 students.

C ommunity of Caring is a national K-12 character education program founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1982. Built around seven core moral values that encourage young people to be responsible and caring members of a community, Community of Caring is used by more than 1,000 schools in the U.S. and Canada.

“This is a well-conceived program that helps reinforce students in their ethical development and evolution toward maturity,” says Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. “We are very pleased to see a program of this kind in our school district.”

School #4/5 has used the Community for Caring program for four years, says Principal Jill Osborne. “It’s an excellent program that keeps the students thinking about positive behavior throughout the year and keeps these core values circulating in the everyday life of the school while allowing parents and staff to be involved as well.”

In addition to the guest speaker presentations, students will perform original poems, songs and drama skits embracing the Community of Caring theme.
