WHAT: Mayor Frank G. Pelzman Addresses “Community of Caring” Assembly

WHEN: Thursday – Sept. 30 – 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Mayor Frank G. Pelzman will speak on Citizenship as part of a Community of Caring assembly Thursday, Sept. 30 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Avenel Street School.

The assembly also features State Senator Joseph Vitale, Woodbridge Township Office of Emergency Management Director Walter Hanks, police instructors from D.A.R.E. and officials from Washington Mutual Bank.

Community of Caring is a national K-12 character education program founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1982. Built around several core moral values that encourage young people to be responsible and caring members of a community, Community of Caring is used by more than 1,000 schools in the U.S. and Canada. In addition to Citizenship, values include Respect, Responsibility, Trustworthiness, Kindness and Caring.

“This is a well-conceived program that helps reinforce students in their ethical development and evolution toward maturity,” says Woodbridge Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. “We are very pleased to see a program of this kind in our school district.”

Avenel Street School has used the Community for Caring program for three years, says Principal Jill Osborne. “It’s a program that keeps the students thinking about positive behavior throughout the year, keeps these core values circulating in the everyday life of the school while allowing parents and staff to be involved as well.”

In addition to the guest speaker presentations, students will perform original poems, songs and drama skits embracing the Community of Caring theme.
