Mayor Urges Eligible Residents to Utilize Early Education, Detection Program

In the time it takes you to read to the end of this article, an American woman will learn she has breast or cervical cancer.

Experts agree that early detection is the best way to combat these diseases, and Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced that Woodbridge Township’s Department of Health and Human Services will host a Cancer Education and Early Detection program Mar. 19 from 9 a.m.- noon.

Eligible women ages 18 through 64 can receive a pap smear, clinical breast exam and an appointment for a mammography – all free of charge. Women 65 and over may be seen if they meet the financial guidelines and have no Medicare or Medicaid insurance.

Appointments for the exams must be made by calling the Middlesex County Health Department at (732) 745-3127. The screening site is the Woodbridge Township Health Center, 2 George Frederick Plaza of Rt. 35 in Woodbridge.

The free screenings are part of the Cancer Education and Early Detection (CEED) program the state of New Jersey has offered since 1996 through its county health departments.

“Unfortunately, too many New Jersey workers have little or no health insurance,” says Mayor Pelzman. “As a result, they may not get the regular screenings and checkups they should have, which increases their risk of life-threatening disease. We urge anyone who is eligible to take the time and obtain the preventive healthcare to which they are entitled.”
