Mayor's Buddy-Ball Tournament Set for Mar. 27

March 16, 2004

The 9th Annual Mayor's Buddy-Ball Basketball Tournament will be played on Saturday, March 27 at Iselin Middle School, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced. Game time is 2:00 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. More than 40 players and several dozen Buddies will be involved in the tournament. There will be hot dogs and soda for the players, Buddies, parents and fans. "This is an event at which our Buddy-Ball kids feel particularly special," said the Mayor. "It's a day when everyone is a winner." Buddy-Ball is a self-supporting sports program for physically and mentally challenged youngsters, which operates 12 months a year, offering programs in baseball, hockey, basketball, swimming, bowling and soccer. The March 27 tournament will feature two inter-squad games. Older players, coached by league President Kevin Fee, will play one game. Younger players, coached by Recreation Department Director John Eberhardt, will play the other game. New this year is Buddy-Ball Cheerleading. Started and coached by Sue Beutel, the Woodbridge Buddy-Ball Cheerleading Squad will perform three drills between the two basketball games. After basketball season ends, the Buddy-Ball program shifts into baseball with season opening games taking place April 18 at Woodbridge Little League Field. Those interested in joining or volunteering in the Buddy-Ball program are asked to call the Woodbridge Township Recreation Department at 732-596-4045 or Angela Fee at 732-416-0190.
