Mayor Cites Importance of Aesthetic Improvements in Township’s Commercial Hubs

Woodbridge Township will receive a $75,000 grant from the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders to enhance downtown streetscapes throughout the township, Mayor Frank G. Pelzman has announced .

“We are always looking for ways to assist our business community,” said Mayor Pelzman. “One very effective method is to make the public space outside their shops as pleasant and customer-friendly as possible.”

The money comes from the Middlesex County Downtown and Business District Improvement Fund that allows for purchase and installation of a variety of street furniture such as planters, flags, banners, trash receptacles and benches.

The funding is part of a coordinated effort by county and township officials to provide extra amenities to the township’s commercial hubs. Additionally, says Mayor Pelzman, some of the grant funds will be used to purchase the township’s second “Green Machine” sweeper designed especially to clean sidewalks in business areas.

“Besides providing comfort to shoppers and pedestrians, public amenities of this kind contribute to a greater sense of community pride,” says Mayor Pelzman. “When citizens see local government making improvements in their neighborhood’s appearance, it creates a better business climate overall.”
